Book launch for 'Midlands' by James Harris

In the early 2010s, waves of English-speaking comedians came to Berlin. What were they doing there? Now there’s a novel about them; about Anglophone comedians touring Germany, about expats and Germans, and about the weird excitement of the Germany of that time. ‘Midlands’ is a coming of age story about two interlinked lives, about love, loss and above all a love letter to the possibilities that Berlin allowed a generation of artists.

The evening will feature a curated discussion about the book with Berlin comedy legends Paul Salamone and Chris Davis, and the author will read extracts from the book.

Entrance is free and books €10. The books are provided with ten beautiful illustrations by London-based artist Ke Zuo.

James Harris is a writer and comedian from Nottingham, England. He has written for The Spectator, The New European, Conservative Home and writes regularly for The Critic. He writes the popular ‘Stiff Upper Quip’ Substack. ‘Midlands’ is his first novel; he lives in Brussels.

BERLIN Stillgelegt

Was ist Raum. Raum in der Stadt.

Freier Raum. Der nicht genutzt wird. Stillgelegter, alter, ungenutzte Raum. Flächen, die brachliegen. Verwahrlost.

BERLIN Stillgelegt

Photography by Kevin Schulzbus

The photo exhibition by Kevin Schulzbus presents analog and digital photographs taken over several years in Berlin. The genuine Berlin photographer and videographer writes the following words about "BERLIN Stillgelegt": "Free space. What is space. Space in the city.

Free space. That is not used. Disused, old, unused space. Areas that lie fallow. Neglected. Useless. And yet so beautiful. I love these places, which are becoming fewer and fewer in Berlin. On my countless kilometers by foot through Berlin, I have collected a large collection of these un-places, non-places and open spaces over 25 years. Disused, forgotten places that are so wonderfully monotonous and yet varied in their own way that you absolutely must not let them fall into oblivion."

Photo and video exhibition by Hannes Jahreis of the street artist "!

"@SeX#─────██████████════█ -_- .“

Since 1995, the Berlin street artist !

"@SeX#─────██████████════█ -_- .“

has felt called upon to leave his mark on Berlin's urban space with brush and paint. In the future, the previously more temporary events are to appear more permanently in the cityscape. He usually applies his signs to garbage, bulky waste, building sites or posters and creates in silence what only works in chaos. Many of you may be familiar with the painted 6, a 6-lettering consisting of ONE line, which also fits in with his keySstroke computer technology. This is about the technical possibility of opening one or more websites or entering text with ONE action on 2 adjacent keys. The exhibition shows a documentary series of his work, interpreted by Hannes Jahreis through video and black and white photography and gives us a small insight into his forays and his creations.

About the artists

Kevin Schulzbus, born in Berlin in 1984, is one of the capital's most active urban photographers. Sometimes more, sometimes less on, above and below the streets of Berlin, his paths automatically lead him to his motifs. By exposing the different layers that the big city brings with it, Kevin shows the true face of Berlin and its characters. Artists, people on and off the street, friends or chance acquaintances pose skillfully, some unskillfully, in front of the photographer's lens. Situations, coincidences and events that are not exactly everyday occurrences shape the documentary works and characterize the styles that Kevin has acquired over the years.

Hannes Jahreis likes to walk the streets of Berlin at night with his camera.

sculpture and works on paper by crista siglin

remnants and remedies:

is an exploration of the body and the mind’s relationship to environment, trauma, time, and phantasmagoria. this collection of work uses medium as both the means of the work, but also as metaphor; with each grain of charcoal or graphite functioning as a placeholder for an ambiguous moment in time

— now or then or hereafter.

the figures of the drawing and painting compositions are both here and not here, inside and outside simultaneously

— with a sense of conflict and confusion.

what are the figures engaged with each other about?
are they the same figure in transformation?
where are they?
what has happened?
often, this is the psychic space of trauma. the work concerns itself with this space.
moving inside, through, and outside variable mediums; this body of work also approaches installation, with the collaboration of Anastave. the piece, RESIDUAL MOVEMENT consists of film and a time-based generated sonic landscape via drawing. our bodies respond to one another, the space, and in doing so also create an environment of both visual and sonic residue. the residues remain in the space after the performance to comprise a site-specific installation for the duration of the show.
this work asks how interpersonal relationships in the present are indelibly affected by the sediment of the past.
return the earth and the earth / will return you / depth of vision of field of dream / shake in the wait of
what / putrid paradigm to crumble and / creak the weeds through that concrete / medicine for the /

lasciare - palermo fassadenfragmente

Opening Fr 01/03 Open SA 02/03 SO 03/03

18-22 15-20 15-18

lasciare - palermo facade fragments

series of images about the poetry of patina by richard ollig/mocoro

The exhibition images of lasciare - Palermo Façade fragments are based on a photo series that is part of a long-term photographic project of observations in the urban space of the centro storico, the historic districts of Palermo, Sicily.

The pictures are an architectural-archaeological view of the patina-like state of the entire old town of Palermo. They document the superimposition of diverse traces of history and the slow but steady process of transformation in Palermo's turn of the noughties.

The scars and holes in the façades capture the stark contrast of the interplay between the incidence of light and the long shadows cast; what is missing is replaced by the shadow and brought back to life. Filigree metal balcony railings are a defining element of the picture.

The works are based on slides as informative image carriers - a manual editing process transfers digital prints of these images using a fresco technique onto handmade cardboard with plaster coatings - the further processing with mixed techniques creates a very unique poetry.

The Palermo façade fragments are layer-thick façade pieces, they appear to have been taken out of the masonry of the buildings.

For the first time, his exhibition Splitter Icons is coming to Berlin.

About

With over 25 years active in one of Sweden's biggest bands, The Sounds,
toured the world several times, Felix has always found new creative projects.
Art is something that was always present when he created music.
Recently, art has become more prominent, and the focus is on creating stories
through paintings, instead of music.

The years as a musician have made a clear impression on Felix's art, which you can now see
in his portrait in broken glass, created with a hammer.
The exhibition Splitter Icons portrays musical icons in a personal way,
where both vulnerability and shattered dreams take place.

Now his works are coming to Berlin for the first time.

- Artists often have something broken inside.
A searching soul that with the help of sound and words
creating magic for all of us to share in.
What I want to convey is a story with a focus on the people behind the music.
A tribute and a thank you to what they have achieved over the years / Felix Rodriguez

After nearly 10 years in the same space, the Lab members will relocate for the second time, to a disused supermarket in Wedding, Berlin.

With a great opportunity to move to a more secure and contained location, Lab members have spent countless hours developing a vision for the new space, demonstrating the creative power of collaboration.

This exhibition is a showcase of the artists who put their life energy into the Lab, giving a little insight into the variety and talent amongst this group.

Their work shown collectively is a celebration of transition, change and diversity. Statt Lab remains completely independent, continuing to expand and support artists and makers from all over the world.

The exhibition "Motherhood II / Shifting Realities" is the second in a series of exhibitions about motherhood and being a woman. The aim of the exhibition is to question and deconstruct myths surrounding male and female attributions. The project is organized and curated by IntAkt - Internationale Aktionsgemeinschaft bildender Künstlerinnen, Vienna - in collaboration with HilbertRaum and Retramp Gallery, two project spaces for contemporary art in Berlin Neukölln. As a member of HilbertRaum, Hannah van Ginkel already curated "Motherhood I / Concepts of Motherhood" in 2023 and the current exhibition is an essential extension.

In "Motherhood II / Shifting Realities", the focus is on intergenerational and historical themes relating to motherhood. Furthermore, socially highly relevant perspectives such as queer feminist and socio-political positions are shown to direct a more intersectional view of the topic. The exhibition also draws attention to social structures that make it difficult for artists - both mothers and non-mothers - to make a name for themselves on the art market.

The vernissage on Friday, 26.01.2024 will be accompanied by the reading "Mutter kocht Suppe" by Lena Kothgasser-Haider at 19:00 in the Retramp Gallery. There will be an artist tour on Saturday, 28.01.2024 from 15:00 - 17:00 Meeting point is in the Hilbertraum. For the finissage on Sunday, 04.02.2024 from 14:00 - 19:00, Tanja Ritterbex will show the performance "How I Apply My Products" at 17:00 in the HilbertRaum.

Parallel to the exhibition, the Motherhood Team will be showing works by international female artists in public spaces on billboards in cooperation with "Procreate Project". Procreate Project is a growing archive of international artists who are mothers/parents. The posters will be shown as a large poster twice in the city, the locations are Manitiusstraße and Fuldastraße (Manitiusstraße 13 and Fuldastraße 53, 12047 Neukölln.

This recent body of work is the continuation of artistic practice along the themes of; colour, physicality and self.

Half the works are of semi-abstract flowers - as a counter to the usual pure abstraction.

The titles of many works have densely loaded emotional topics such as “17 Days Of Mania Followed By 4 Days Of Emptiness” and “Asking You To Tell Me That You Love Me First, So That I Know It’s Not A Reflex”. By keeping a diary, I was able to name the paintings based on what I had written for that day. Sometimes my thoughts appear as signs or poems, making it easy to find lines that resonate and reflect the works. Sometimes the words/title came first, sometimes the act of painting.

One research project “Drawing Flowers Every Day - April/May” was where I would find flowers outside to digitally draw. Some of these were then adapted to physical paintings. Originally I had intended to draw “bad” flowers, but I was enjoying this process too much, and instead started to draw without intention of “good” or “bad”.

Repetitive movements along with my personal relationship to colour can be seen in the Horizontal Lines series.

Small explorations into cloud-like abstraction can be seen in the Colourscapes series.

Finally, as a way to have less control, I would lie on my back on the ground and paint with a 2 meter stick on the wall.

POSTCARDS I FORGOT TO SEND

2008 - 2023

An Exhibition by Mark Robert Hunt

POSTCARDS I FORGOT TO SEND marks a time for change and an end (for now) to life in Berlin.

But …  before I leave this wonderful city and the beautiful people that have been part of my life for

the past 15 years I would like to part with a leaving gift that illustrates somewhat the vibrant,

exciting and often batshit crazy memories I have of being a photographer and filmmaker in this wild city!

For two nights I will adorn the walls of ReTramp gallery with these memories.  In the form of postcards, images and film spanning the last 15 years of my life in Berlin, I would like to celebrate my graduation and dig into some of my favourite moments some of which, to this date, I have never shared.

The exhibition will cover imagery of squat culture, demonstrations, parties, collectives, fashion

and a few surprises along the way.

A Long Walk Home - Jorge Abella

A Long Walk Home - Jorge Abella

A Long Walk Home.

It´s the long parth that these kids take to return home after the day grazing cattle, the main

and only sustenance of their families.

This involves another more important connotation: the way of nomadic or semi-nomadic

groups - such as the Maasai - where their life is a continuous journey, through different

territories, depending on the seasons, but without the existence of borders or political maps,

and where the only used to be is the geography (in the old times). To then always

return to the same place, the circle closes. And then it starts all over again.

This leads me to other reflections: the idea of freedom that many people long for in modern

societies, where in spite of all the technological advances, we often need that long journey,

moving to other places, other cities, other countries, other jobs, other friends. It often also

happens that in the end we find ourselves in the same places of origin. The circle closes.

And it starts all over again.

In the beginning was the drawing

Drawing is the most direct form of capturing thoughts in a visual language on paper. The first one was made seventy thousand years ago in a cave in South Africa. The last in distant AI time (...).

Drawing unites all people. Whether it's doodling with crayons, which we all tried our hand at as children, or leaving a trace in the sand; it is the first experience that we can create something lasting out of nothing - like on a white sheet of paper - that possibly finds resonance in the environment. And we realise that nothing is not nothing, but is Us. Our consciousness, our creation. Drawing on paper is the mother of art. It is still free, before the expectations of school, of society in general, want to dictate what art should look like.

Drawing is the foundation of every art form. Drawing does not lie. It is direct information about the creator. The sculptor uses it to quickly capture thoughts for forms. Lines that are able to represent volume. Film ideas are captured through storyboards. The line that reproduces movement as well as narration. And it can cast light and shadow directly onto a piece of paper through tautness and contour to the painter. On the road, in the mountains, in the pub.

Immediately. In this way, drawing can be the freezing of an artistic idea or a sensation that the artist’s later transfer to another medium, with more idleness and effort, the preparation of the material, and finds its actual purpose. But it can also be the main work, an original on paper.

Whether chaotic, constructed, representational or abstract, political or erotic, the work on paper opens up a universe in its simplicity. The exhibition PAPERY attempts to depict an atom of this and to give an insight into the different visual languages of the 11 artists presented. Their common ground lies not only in drawing on paper, but also in their origins in graffiti writing, calligraphy or mural painting. Whether post- or mid-graffiti, possibly pre-, graffiti crossed their biographies in different ways and shaped their lives and style. In the group exhibition PAPERY, RETRAMP Gallery presents originals on paper created with various techniques and materials, such as charcoal, pencil, ink, oil pastels, fineliner, watercolour or mixed media. From the classic sketch to the paper work that already approaches painting.

what the book - gorjeoux moon

'what the book ‽'

an exhibition by gorjeoux moon

is a set of six 105mm square book shaped poetry sculptures, 'what the book ‽' delves deep into the possibilities of what book can be, what being book can mean, and what can be said when freed from the binds of convention.

what is a book when its pages are unbound? what does that do to the stories within? what happens when words are no longer fixed, instead moving around and  through pages? or when lines of letters phase in and out of eachother? or when a book unfolds in different directions, instructing the reader how to constantly reorient themselves to it and its content?

six books, six concept, six bindings containing dozens of novel technical and poetic techniques', 'what the book‽' is a library of conceptual concrete poetry 'books' which the reader must haptically engage with and perform themselves in order to experience what book, page, and poem can be outside of expectations of form.

'i remember this one time' is a collection of memories that are re ordered dependent on the context of their recollection

'dreamworld - a liberello' is a self aware labyrinth that explores the self that is aware, as well as family, transition, and language itself

'sometimes the best beginnings' cracks open wide the very concept of page itself, incepting a poetic form in which words dance across the page - appearing, disappearing, and morphing into new ones as they move through and within the paper they are printed upon

'i am from my self' continues in this form and becomes a collection of deeply personal experiential and relational poetry. poetry which discovers self, heals trauma, battles addiction, and overcomes abuse

'palimpsest' (wt) consolidates the playfulness of this new fangled form and imbues it further with hard won wisdom whilst tempering the abject beauty of being with the utter absurdity of consciousness

'imagine dancing' completes the set as the most 'conventional' book of them all. approximately 200 haiku printed and bound in chronological order, chaptered with the names and dates of the notebooks they were written in. taking the 5 7 5 form and pushing it frequently past it's breaking point, these poems are the doodles, meditations, bases of kinetic pieces, and crystallisations of thought and understanding that punctuated and accompanied my life between Dec 19 and Jan 23.

All You Need Is Love

" From 28 July to 6 August, the Retramp gallery is hosting the exhibition "All you need is love" by French artist photographer Romain Berger.

Opening night on Friday 28 July from 6pm in the presence of the artist.
The Retramp gallery will be the third date of this tour which will have been previously presented in France and in England.
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE is a message of tolerance and love in a society that is regressing day by day, putting the lives of queer people more and more at risk.
Come and celebrate with us the freedom to be who we want to be, without judgement and without debate.

ABOUT THE ARTIST :
ROMAIN BERGER is a photographer of the French scene, born at the end of the 80s in Normandy (Cherbourg).
With a background in film and theatre, he has long been fascinated by images, popular culture, stereotypes and gender issues.
He produces artistic works that are offbeat, cinematographic, colourful and gently provocative. He unabashedly claims to be a camp artist, a concept that designates, among other things, a form of self-mockery that allows gay men to laugh at the difficulties of their condition in a homophobic society, all with artifice and exaggeration.
This is why he voluntarily takes clichés from gay culture and twists them in order to highlight our world, both in its best and worst aspects (loneliness, superficiality, overconsumption, violence, addiction, sex, politics ...)
We all have hidden vices, and what interests him is not the public image, but our secrets and what goes on in private. A way of criticising the hypocrisy of the human race and the political correctness imposed by a patriarchal society. Life has no rules, we are the only masters of our game.

Influenced by photographer David Lachapelle's staging and director Gregg Araki's aestheticism for his colours, his work is an ode to life, love and freedom of expression.

A subculture artist, he is the photo equivalent of so-called independent cinema. He does not follow the current trends and mixes cinema and queer universe to the extreme, far from the photographic fashion of the moment, which seeks the maximum of naturalness. Little valued in his own country, he finds his recognition abroad where he is often celebrated, whether in magazines or exhibitions.

Thanks to this recognition abroad, the English publisher Men on paper art published in September 2022, LIFE'S A CABARET, a book on his work, gathering all his photographs since 2018. In this continuity, Germany has published SEX UTOPIA, a 400-page book, presenting 70 artists from all over the world, of which he is a part alongside the artists Pierre et Gilles.

Queer London - Marc Vallée & Jack Scollard with historian Ben Miller

Join Marc Vallée for the Berlin launch of 90s Archive: Volume One at the Retramp Gallery on Thursday 20 July 2023. Marc will be in conversation with Bad Gays co-author  Ben Miller. The talk will be in English and a book signing will take place after.

Register: Eventbrite.

"The pictures are autobiographical; a window into Vallée’s life in 90s London. However, they have a wider historical and political significance, capturing queer youth as the gay community slowly emerged from the horror of the 80s and early-90s global AIDS epidemic, Margaret Thatcher and Clause 28, which was in effect until 2003."
- British Journal of Photography, December, 2022.

“As a teenager of the 80s with Thatcher, AIDS and Clause 28 it’s not a surprise I ended up documenting my friends when I got to art school in the 90s...”
- DAZED Magazine, November, 2022.

Biographies

Marc Vallée is a London-based documentary photographer. His zines and photobooks are held in the collections of Tate Britain, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Museum of London, Martin Parr Foundation and Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris. Ben Miller is a writer and historian living in Berlin. With Huw Lemmey, he hosts Bad Gays, a podcast about evil and complicated queers in history, which has been downloaded nearly a million times; a book based on the show and passionately arguing for a more complex and political queer public history, Bad Gays: A Homosexual History, was published by Verso in 2022.

Come Closer

Utopia:
Utopia, an Italian artist living in Berlin, rooted in graffiti writing, has embarked on a journey of experimentation with abstract and surrealism. She merges graffiti lettering with abstract elements and figurative or representational depictions. Their artistic creations showcase a delicate balance between the letters and imaginative visuals, seamlessly integrating each other in compositions.
Utopia also focuses on representing women in a manner that breaks free from traditional expectations of the female body. In an attempt to confront objectification, Utopia paints women without heads, symbolising how society often reduces women to objects.

Amelie:
AMELIE DEGENDORFER (*30.03.1995) grew up in Bavaria’s countryside and now is living and working in Berlin. Impacted by childhood memories the artist is painting abstracted figures in an expressively colorful and naïve style - depicting a certain nostalgia for the careless times of being a kid. Mainly focusing on large scale canvas light installations, the artist is making use of contoured geometric shapes while working with mixed media, discussing social topics. The artist studies medicine with psychiatric focus, writing a doctors thesis in schizophrenia research. While working in hospitals the artist got to know many aspects of life, which included death, birthing and everything in between. It seems to create balance to swap reality into wonderland made of thick glossy layers.

Esra_woite:
ESRA WOITE (*27.07.1988), works as an illustrator and tattoo artist. The artist currently focuses on erotic illustrations and visualization of eccentric characters. Her floristic images are cosmopolitan, feminist and reflect themes of our progressive society.

Numb
Numb by the noise of the world outside
I want to free myself mentally,
not destruktive,
I create
my sheltered world.
This is were I’m naked and completely.
Completely free of judgement and worries.
It is simply a place
It is place that embraces me
with its reassuring beauty.
Whatever was lost on my way here
I recollect within my pictures.
Within them
Is where I find myself.
Not a self-portrait
only an order of my feelings (and experienced.)
it's a process
that leads me to the love
and acceptance of myself.
It is a process
that takes the numb feeling away from me.
it lets me guess who I could be
And for a moment I feel no numb
I just feel
I feel only myself

Sehven25:
Seven25 is a Scottish born artist currently residing in Berlin, whose artistic output primarily revolves around painting.
His work remains rooted in graffiti writing, however letters that once were have devolved into an exploration of abstract forms and shapes. Alongside the use of recurring elements representing people and past memories. This amalgamation of styles allows Seven to craft compositions that straddle the line between urban vibrancy and enigmatic abstraction.

Alleehoppsasa:
My stage name is Alleehoppsasa. I was born, raised and live in Berlin. I practice the art for many reasons. I use them to express myself, distract myself and above all... to have fun!

I try to fuse organic forms and liquid elements on canvases.

I am happy to inspire people with my art and to dream.

something weird between cute and naughty

From 19 to 21 May 2023, 3 - 7 pm, the Retramp gallery is hosting the exhibition "something weird between cute and naughty" by Berlin - based cartoon artist Diana [deijaenaa]

Opening night is May 19 at 4 pm in the presence of the artist and guest artist Sinah with @blurr.magazine, surrounded by groovy sounds of Matt Mendo.

"something weird between cute and naughty" will take you on a journey through the mind of the artist. Head full of cute, naked and horny characters, most combined with satisfying octopus(sys) and slime.

This art is representing the combination of being a child and a grown ass at the same time – as well as the damaged girl perspective, damaged and annoyed from all this toxicity out there.

Everything produced in digital prints, with acrylic paint on canvas or other materials - colorful, trashy and provocative.

Find in this exhibition a lot of self-love, vulnerability, nakedness and weirdness and remember never to lose the joy and curiosity of childhood. Forget to be serious and make a lot of love – with others or just with yourself.

Stay horny - stay cute and let me confuse you - and give you the perfect "what the fuck" moment.

Crush

Alexandra Aquilina and Nessa Finnegan come together for the first time to present a collaborative exhibition, “Crush” at Retramp, Berlin. Their work explores slices of the complexities found within the clash of femininity and culture. "Crush" embodies two distinct meanings; a noun, representing the frivolity and innocence of youth and a verb, reflecting the devastatingly taxing aspects of womanhood. Through their art, both artists explore these dichotomies and create a thought-provoking dialogue on the various layers of the female experience.
